Verizon customers are being targeted in a smishing scam
Be careful with it

Cybercriminals have been targeting Verizon customers following a recent network outage.
Verizon, a cellular service provider, recently faced a significant network outage. In a scam, you receive a text message that seems to be from Verizon, claiming that your reward points have expired and can be redeemed. The message includes a link and urges you to click on it immediately to claim your points. You might mistakenly believe that this message is related to the recent network outage and be tempted to follow the instructions.
However, this is actually a smishing, or text phishing, scam! Cybercriminals are exploiting the recent news stories about a mobile outage to trick you. If you click on the link in the message, youโll be redirected to a fake website where theyโll ask you to enter your financial information to claim your reward. But if you provide your banking details, the scammers will steal them!
To avoid falling victim to a smishing scam, follow these tips:
- Never click on links in unexpected texts, even if the message seems to be from a legitimate source like your mobile carrier.
To verify if you genuinely have an account credit or reward, open the official Verizon app on your phone or log in to their official website.
Be extremely cautious if a website requests your credit card number or bank details to provide you with a credit or reward.
Although this smishing scam targeted Verizon customers, the safety tips provided apply to all cellular providers.
